Click Now to check the details! In 1937, Westinghouse Company built an atom smasher on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, PA. The atom smasher stood 65 feet or five stories high. It was the first industrial particle accelerator ever built. According to Physics Central, "Its unusual bulb shape is because it is an old Van de Graaff style electrostatic accelerator. The steel dome would build up a huge electrical charge, repelling positively charged ions down a beam tube onto an experiment or detector." The Westinghouse Atom Smasher – one of the most pivotal parts of our history in nuclear research in not only the United States, but the entire world. This accelerator worked by static electricity from a Van de Graaff generator, which was invented by Robert J. Van de Graaff in 1929.

When the Westinghouse Electric Company’s “atom smasher” first took up residence in Forest Hills, just east of Pittsburgh, in the summer of 1937, the silver light-bulb-shaped structure was seen as a beacon of progress. The atom smasher structure is the very last remaining vestige of all that transpired at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories, but today it is in an extremely vulnerable and threatened condition. Many of us from Forest Hills and Chalfant were stunned and dismayed when on January 20, 2015, the atom smasher, having stood steadfastly for nearly 80 years, was torn down.
